The weight and load capacity of a shipping container

When purchasing a shipping container, weight is one of the most important specifications to consider. This includes not only the empty weight, but also the maximum payload. This is the weight that the container can safely carry.

Hacon has been a specialist since 1981 and has an experienced team that advises companies on the right container solutions every day. From our branches in Rotterdam and Purmerend, we help customers throughout the Netherlands choose the right container. Thanks to our many years of knowledge and practical experience, you can be sure that you are choosing a reliable solution that suits your project.

Why container weight is crucial for SOLAS-VGM

One of the most important international rules for shipping containers is SOLAS VGM, which stands for Verified Gross Mass. This requires that the gross mass of a packed container be determined in advance and communicated to the freight forwarder or shipping company.

This means that you not only need to know the weight of the cargo, but also the weight of the empty shipping container. The SOLAS Convention stipulates that the total weight of all containers on board must be known and verified. If containers are loaded without their gross mass being checked, the shipping company and the terminal are liable.

Different container weights

The weight of a container varies depending on the type. For example, a 40ft container weighs considerably more than a 20ft container, but that does not automatically mean that its load capacity is also higher.

Because the dimensions and weights vary per container type, it is important to make the right choice between the standard 20ft and 40ft shipping containers in advance.

Which shipping container is right for you?

The overview shows that a 40ft container cannot automatically carry twice as much as a 20ft container. For the highest load weight, the 20ft container is the best choice. This is due to its sturdy construction, which allows the container to handle heavier loads.

In addition to weight, other specifications also play a role, such as dimensions. Do you need a little more space than a standard 20ft container offers? Then the 20ft high cube container is an interesting option. This container is one foot taller (approximately 30 cm), creating extra loading space, while the maximum load and weight remain the same as the standard 20ft container.

FAQ

What is the weight and load capacity of a 20ft container?
A 20ft container has an empty weight of approximately 2.250–2.400 kg and can carry a maximum payload of approximately 28.000 kg. Its sturdy construction makes this the container with the highest load capacity.

What is the weight and load capacity of a 40ft container?
An empty 40ft container weighs an average of 3.700–4.200 kg. The maximum load capacity is around 27.600 kg. Despite its larger size, this does not automatically mean that a 40ft container can carry more than a 20ft container.

What is a high cube container?
A high cube container is one foot taller than a standard container. This creates extra loading space in terms of height, while the maximum weight remains the same. This makes an HC container ideal for large-scale goods.

What is SOLAS VGM and why is it important?
SOLAS VGM stands for Safety of Life at Sea - Verified Gross Mass. The convention requires that the total weight of a container be determined in advance and communicated to the shipping company. This ensures safe and correct loading on seagoing vessels.

What is the delivery time for a container?
The delivery time depends on the type of container and any modifications. Standard containers are often available directly from stock. For customization or modifications, we draw up a customized schedule.
