What is a CSC container?

A CSC container is a transport container that complies with the international safety standards of the Convention for Safe Containers (CSC). This convention, drawn up in 1972 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), ensures that containers can be used safely worldwide.

The purpose of the CSC is to regulate the maintenance and inspection of containers in order to prevent damage and accidents during transport. Containers are inspected at fixed intervals to assess whether they are still strong and reliable enough. When a container passes this inspection, it receives a CSC plate (or seal) as proof that it is safe for international transport.

What are the most important CSC safety regulations?

In order to be allowed for international transport, every CSC container must meet strict requirements:

  • Construction requirements: the containers must be sufficiently strong and made of materials that can withstand the conditions during transport.
  • Test procedures: every container must be subjected to tests to check its strength and durability.
  • Inspection and maintenance: containers must be regularly inspected and maintained to remain safe and reliable.
  • Safety approval: each container must have a certification plate affixed to it confirming that it meets the safety requirements.

When do you need a CSC container?

You need a CSC container as soon as you want to transport goods internationally by sea, road, or rail. Only containers with valid CSC certification may be officially used for cross-border transport. This certificate proves that the container complies with international safety standards. The CSC was established in 1972 and ratified by many countries worldwide, so that the same basic standards apply everywhere.

Please note: some countries have additional requirements. Therefore, always check carefully which rules apply to your specific situation.
