A behind-the-scenes look at Hacon Container Depot

A behind-the-scenes look at Hacon Container Depot image

If you think a container depot is simply a place where empty containers are stored, think again. Every day, much more happens at Hacon Container Depot (HCD), located at Butaanweg 52 in Rotterdam. From container inspections and repairs to reefer monitoring and logistical coordination, our experienced team works behind the scenes to keep container flows running smoothly.

We spoke with Aroen, who has been working at this location for many years and witnessed Hacon's acquisition of the depot firsthand. He shares how the depot has evolved, what he is most proud of, and why HCD plays such an important role in the Port of Rotterdam.

A new chapter with confidence

Until last year, the depot at Butaanweg was known as Overbeek Container Control (OCC). When Hacon Containers acquired the depot, the news came as a surprise to Aroen.

"At first, you're naturally curious about how such a transition will turn out. It didn't take long before I developed a positive feeling. Hacon has shown that they are willing to invest in the depot, the people and the quality of our services."

The acquisition not only created new opportunities but also introduced many new colleagues. According to Aroen, that has been one of the biggest advantages.

"Everyone brings their own knowledge and experience. We learn a great deal from one another, which only makes us stronger as a team."

A strategic location in the Port of Rotterdam

The Butaanweg location has been a well-known site within the Port of Rotterdam for many years, and for good reason.

Its central location, close to container terminals and major transport connections, enables HCD to respond quickly and serve customers with maximum flexibility. In a port where available space for container storage is becoming increasingly scarce, that is a significant advantage.

"We are seeing more and more vacant sites being redeveloped into distribution centres. While that makes sense from a market perspective, the port also needs sufficient space for container storage and logistics services."

With its strategic location, extensive facilities and years of experience, Hacon Container Depot continues to play an important role in the logistics chain of the Port of Rotterdam.

Behind the scenes: no two days are the same

At a container depot, everything revolves around planning, efficiency and quality. Every morning starts with coordinating incoming and outgoing container movements.

Throughout the day, the team carries out a wide range of activities, including:

  • Container inspections
  • Container repairs
  • Container cleaning
  • Empty container storage
  • Connecting, monitoring and checking reefer containers

In addition, the team remains in constant contact with customers, both by phone and via EDI, to ensure that daily container movements are handled as efficiently as possible. According to Aroen, this variety is exactly what makes the job so rewarding. No two days are ever the same.

Investing in quality: a brand-new reefer rack

One of the depot's latest investments is the complete renewal of its reefer rack. An important upgrade that benefits both daily operations and customer service.

"The old reefer rack had reached the end of its lifespan. We're pleased that this investment has now been completed."

The new installation not only improves operational efficiency but also gives the depot a cleaner, more modern and professional appearance.

"It reflects our commitment to quality. In the end, our customers notice that through the level of service we provide."

The new reefer rack was realised in close cooperation with our colleagues at Hacon Container Modifications (HCM). Thanks to the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved, the project was completed successfully.

Proud of the team, ready for the future

Looking back on the period since the acquisition, Aroen is especially proud of the way the team embraced the transition.

"Although the acquisition required everyone to adapt, together we managed to keep operations running smoothly and continue providing our customers with the level of service they had come to expect."

He also expresses his appreciation for the contributions of colleagues Paul and Samantha, both of whom played an important role during the transition. Although Samantha is no longer part of Hacon, her dedication during that period certainly deserves recognition.

According to Aroen, investments such as the new reefer rack demonstrate Hacon's confidence in the future of the depot. And the future looks promising. By continuing to invest in people, equipment and services, Hacon Container Depot can support its customers even better and further strengthen its position as a trusted container depot in the Port of Rotterdam. Behind every container that leaves the depot is a dedicated team committed to quality, flexibility and outstanding service.
